Be aware of wonder.  Live a balanced life – learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work every day some. ~ Robert Fulghum

Balance is so important in our lives and yet it is something we often take for granted, especially physically.  We know which way is up and which way is down because our bodies have marvelously complex systems to keep us oriented every moment, no matter which way we turn.  Tiny crystals in our inner ears play an important role in helping us keep our balance.

I know this because my ear crystals recently escaped from their proper place and I had a wicked episode of vertigo.  Fortunately, my doctor knew what to do – a maneuver called the Epley that realigns them and stops the vertigo.  I still have some residual effects, which may last awhile, but they are nothing like before.  Believe me, I no longer take balance for granted!  I am grateful every time I roll over in bed and the room doesn’t spin and every time I bend over to put on my shoes without falling on my face.

I think we have “crystals” in our spirits that help keep us happy and oriented and upright.  These crystals are different for everyone.  I believe Dr. Fulghum was writing about them, the things each of us does that fill us with the wonder of life.  The specific activities are different for everyone but we all need to work and we all need to play.  Sometimes we get out of balance by playing too much and working too little but, for us grownups, it’s usually the other way around.

Trouble happens when an essential crystal gets displaced, when you neglect your “play,” and your spirit starts to spin.  You know when it happens but sometimes you feel helpless to stop it and the more you try, the worse you feel.  This happens to me when my sing and dance and play crystals get overwhelmed by the work crystals and things spin out of control.  I feel guilty when I try to fix the problem by focusing on fun and play to get back in balance.  Sometimes, I try to fix it by working harder and harder, playing less and less, until my spirit is a in a crumpled heap on the floor.

When your spirit is spinning, when you feel off balance and don’t know why, check your crystals.  It’s pretty much a given that we all have enough work crystals so spend some time to figure out what your play crystals are (yes, you can have more than one!).  Do you love music or dancing?  How about drawing, watching funny films or playing with your dog?  Whatever it is, GO DO IT!!!!

These are IMPORTANT activities, people, you NEED them to keep your life in balance.  Make sure your work and play crystals are all there and in their proper places.  If they’re not, go do something wonder-ful to get them realigned, a spiritual Epley, if you will.  Gotta go now.  They’re playing my song!
